Children's Court justice blames Facebook for cruel school bullying

A bullied Geelong secondary school student was granted an intervention order against her bully, both of whom cannot be identified for legal reasons, The Geelong Advertiser reports.

The mother of the bullied teen told the Children's Court her daughter had endured six years of ongoing harassment.

She said the bullying, which started when the girls were in primary school, began with the bully stealing small items from the girl's home and taunting her at school.

It later escalated to verbal and online death threats, she said.

The victim's mother said the bully had both assaulted her daughter at school and followed her home, in a car and on foot, calling her names and threatening her.

She said on one occasion her daughter was so scared she had to take refuge in a nearby veterinary clinic.

Her daughter also received threatening phone calls and Facebook messages saying she was "dead meat".

The magistrate said Facebook was a forum for things that shouldn't be said at all.

"If I had my way, there wouldn't be any Facebook," the magistrate said.

"And it would save me a lot of the work I have to do in this court."

The concerned mother said police had been involved in the matter and the school had conducted an unsuccessful mediation between the girls.
